London Olympics Open With Historic First for Muslim Women

Sharif, a civil engineer, was an on-site director ensuring that the clearance of the Park site pre-construction met the ‘zero-waste games’ goal.

Hadid, the first British Muslim and woman architect to win the prestigious Pritzer—the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in architecture—is the designer of the acclaimed London Aquatics Center for the games—a ‘Pringles chip’ looking building, by far the most beautiful building in the Park.

Ramadan, Summer and Kids

The crankiness meter in our house tends to rise during the Holy Month of Ramadan. So much so, that several years ago when I saw t-shirts at an Islamic fair with the Arabic words “Sabr and Shukr” and their translation “Patience and Gratitude” on the front I snapped them up for myself and my offspring. The hope was that a visual reminder, in bold italic script, splashed across our torsos would be a not so subtle hint to observe the true meaning of Ramadan.

The Brown Woman's Burden

More than a quarter said they could see themselves ‘with no one else but a black man in the future.’

According to the report, ‘Indian men are clingy, insecure and refuse to return the favor.’

The findings seem to have knocked the air out of the Indian community, who claim, as usual, that they are being specifically targeted. Community leaders are said to be outraged; South African Hindu and Muslim leaders released a joint statement in which they accuse the Race Still Matters Institute of being ‘purposefully tasked with a mission to sabotage the celebrations of a 150 years of Indians in South Africa.’

Birth of a Democracy

This year, our celebration of independence coincided with the historic birth of Egypt’s democracy. While enjoying the usual barbeque and fireworks, I could not help but reflect on the fact that during the prior week, the population of my birthplace witnessed their first democratically elected president swearing an oath of office. It was an emotional moment for tens of millions of Egyptians all over the world, a celebration of freedom after struggle that was realized only after thousands of years of tyranny and oppression dating back before the time of Moses. A celebration of peace embodied by the word and action of local protestors chanting “silmeya, silmeya” (peaceful, peaceful) even in the face of violent attacks by the regime.
