This year, our celebration of independence coincided with the historic birth of Egypt’s democracy. While enjoying the usual barbeque and fireworks, I could not help but reflect on the fact that during the prior week, the population of my birthplace witnessed their first democratically elected president swearing an oath of office. It was an emotional moment for tens of millions of Egyptians all over the world, a celebration of freedom after struggle that was realized only after thousands of years of tyranny and oppression dating back before the time of Moses. A celebration of peace embodied by the word and action of local protestors chanting “silmeya, silmeya” (peaceful, peaceful) even in the face of violent attacks by the regime.

Morsi’s wife, Naglaa Ali Mahmoud, has also been the focus of confused media scrutiny. Mahmoud, who dresses according to Islamic tradition and does not hold a college degree, is the exact opposite of how we, in the West, like to see the wives of foreign leaders. Without the designer glamour and advanced degree, she must be oppressed, right?

So many of them have been struggling just to survive, pinching piasters in order to buy their daily bread. From the start, I have been in awe of Ibrahim, or Bibo, as we call him. That is why when my wife and I discussed the possibility of me staying at home with him full-time I jumped on it. My decision to be a stay-at-home-dad has not always been met with such enthusiasm, however, by some in my family and community.
Is It a Muslim’s Duty to Enforce Islamic Law?

In the last two years, anti-Muslim activists have produced dozens of “anti-Shariah” bills in nearly half of America’s states. This is supposedly being done to protect American law and shield the country from the onslaught of “Islamization.” Even though American Muslims have just about zero interest in changing the legal system, a vociferous right-wing fringe insists that Muslims are concealing their true intentions, and that their faith demands that they establish Islam as the law of the land. To support this claim, some figures cite the Qur’anic injunction to “command right and forbid wrong.” This command, taken at face value, might seem to call for the government enforcement of Islamic morality on men and women, but a closer look at the Qur’an yields an abundance of evidence indicating that the sacred text does not support such an interpretation.

As a member of the Kuwaiti royal family, the Sheikha has made it a point to promote art by Western artists within the region as well as to highlight Middle Eastern artists abroad through her art advisory group called JAMM. We got a chance to speak to the Sheikha.
