Several officers in the Syrian security forces are reported to be amongst the casualties. The attack took place in the Midan district of the city, close to a mosque, and follows a car bombing in the same area in January that killed almost 30 people.
The previous weeks have only seen a drop in the overall level of violence between the government’s forces and the opposition, rather than the complete halt called for by UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
