Following the passing of Crown Prince Nayef on Saturday, King Abdullah has issued a royal order to name his brother Prince Salman—the current Minister of Defense—as Crown Prince. Prince Salman shall remain as Minister of Defense, as well as taking on the role of Deputy Premier.
As Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, 76 year-old Salman becomes first-in-line to 88-year-old King Abdullah’s throne. The appointment is not a surprise and was expected by most observers, who anticipated a swift resolution to the question of succession in the wake of Prince Nayef’s passing.
Crown Prince Salman has a reputation for being an intelligent and hard-working statesman. He has earned recognition for his fairness, competence and knowledge and he is highly regarded and respected by his fellow citizens. He is the father of Sultan bin Salman, the first Muslim and Arab astronaut.
